Battery Cold Cranking Current (CCA)

Low temperature is the worst condition for the battery: ●● The engine oil viscosity is high and so the electrical energy required for cranking ●● The battery electrolyte is cold reducing chemical reactions ●● The battery internal resistance is higher reducing electrical output

The cold crank current relates to battery power, it is the current that can be drawn from the battery at -18°C during 10s, before battery voltage falls under 7,5V (European Standard EN50342.1) Typical values for new, fully charged lead-acid batteries are in the range of 400 to more than 800A for large capacity engines.

Cold cranking current demand and battery capacity at low temperatures are unfortunately not moving in the same direction!
