VS - Electrical Systems From Stop-Start to Hybridization

What is stratification in batteries?

l Increases the battery O pen C ircuit V oltage affecting the S tate o f C harge assessment (mismatch between the voltage and the real SoC)

Stratification happens over time in lead acid flooded batteries. The electrolyte sulfuric acid solution tends to concentrate in the bottom of the battery. This heavier concentrated sulfuric acid: ●● Corrodes the plates in the lower section of the battery. ●● Increases the plates sulfation

AGM batteries are not sensitive to sratification as the acid electrolyte solution is immobilized ; this makes AGM technology a good candidate for a safer SoC predictability.
